The Reserve Bank of India was established on April 1, 1935 in accordance with the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.
Management of currency is one of the core central banking functions of the Reserve Bank. In terms of Section 22 of the Reserve Bank of India Act, the Reserve Bank is the sole authority for issue of currency in India.
